My (and your) Story Of Transformational Growth
I should have been euphoric. I should have been wildly ecstatic, walking on cloud 9 and yes, maybe even a little bit proud.
But I wasn’t.
It was September, 2001 and as I sat alone at my dining room table, staring at the magnificent trophy I had just won, declaring me the National Champion and qualifying me to finally compete internationally at the pinnacle of amateur physique competition, “The NABBA Universe,” all I could think was,
“Is that it? Is this all there is?”
It All Came Crashing Down!
The truth is, although I had been declared a winner in the eyes of the outside world, behind my own eyes, in my inner world, I felt like a complete loser.
As I sat there, I wondered how I would ever be able to pay for the flight overseas to compete. My finances were a mess and I was already deeply in debt.
I was absolutely exhausted from working the long hours that I needed to work with my clients just to keep my head above the rising financial tide.
I didn’t want to see people, I didn’t want to talk to people and, quite honestly, wondered if was possible that I had completely lost all sense of my personality.
Additionally, I had recently gone through a divorce and I was struggling to cope with the emotion of it all.
I had learned very early in my life that exercise, and specifically resistance exercise gave me relief from the deep childhood depression I had felt growing up.
From the age of 14, I had thrown myself relentlessly into training and became addicted to how it made me feel.
My depression and my childhood circumstances had left me feeling very inferior to and isolated from my peers. But as my body began to change and take on a new shape, I began to get a new and unusual kind of attention!
Once again, I had found something else that training gave me that made me feel good.
I began to build my identity, my self-worth, values and everything related to my world view around the external validation I was getting.
Essentially, I was trying to fill the emptiness I was feeling on the inside with everything from the outside.
I was living on a knife-edge, trying to be as perfect as I could to avoid criticism so my fragile emotions wouldn’t knock me down, all the while neglecting everything else in my life.
And that night in September, it all came crashing down!
Something Had To Change...Awakening To Transformational Growth
The words of Neil Diamond playing on the television in the background that night rang true in my head:-
“I am I cried; I am said I…and I am lost and I can’t even say why…”
I realised in that moment that I was indeed truly lost!
But that moment was also an awakening. It brought home the stark realisation that my life could not continue down this path for another moment!
Something had to change!
As that moment turned into days and then into weeks and months, I began to become obsessed (maybe even desperate!) with finding the answers I needed to finally move my life forward.
I realised that if I wanted transformational growth, I had to create a brand new vision for my life. But not just any vision. A vision that would be powerful and compelling enough to pull me in a new direction.
After spending some time thoughtfully crafting my new powerful and compelling vision, I immediately got to work. I asked myself what I needed to DO to achieve it. After all, a big bold vision requires big bold action to achieve transformational growth!
And that is when I smashed into myself!
The Gap And The Gain!
I could not get myself to follow through and take the actions I needed to take. The harder I seemed to try, the more stuck I seemed to feel.
I soon learned that there was a huge GAP between who I was and the person I needed to become to achieve transformational growth and that compelling vision.
Standing in the GAP was my limiting identity from the past, my disempowering emotions, negative thought patterns, limiting beliefs, misaligned values and a poor self-worth.
All these things made bringing my vision into the world a very painful process which required tremendous courage to face.
They were the lens through which I was viewing my life, or the unconscious internal PATTERNS that I was consistently running that were creating my reality.
I became aware that unless I could learn to recognise and break these patterns, they would continue to limit my transformational growth and my ability to impact the actions that ultimately would shape my destiny.
They were keeping me trapped in doubt, frustration, anxiety and overwhelm. They were zapping my energy and keeping me feeling like I was stuck.
Becoming more and being more, closing the GAP between knowing and growing was the hero’s journey that I needed to embark on if my life was to change.
The internal resistance I encountered from the day I stepped into the GAP was greater and harder to push against than any resistance I had every pushed against in the gym.
But I also knew that the more of that resistance I could push against internally the bigger and stronger I would become in the real world and the more I would experience transformational growth.
By stepping into the gap every day and looking at that transformational growth, how much I had gained, I realized I was now living my life from the inside out, not the outside in and that true progress does indeed mean happiness!
The Hero's Journey
Everybody has their own story in life. Like some rite of passage, what is common to nearly all of us is that at some point we hit a plateau or get stuck. The only way we can overcome this is by stepping into the GAP.
What makes us individuals is our own unique combination of emotions, thoughts, beliefs, values, self-esteem and identity that creates the GAP.
My hero’s journey over the last two decades has been about figuring out how to quickly slam the GAP shut so that I create the transformational growth I needed to be to shape my own future.
What I discovered by immersing myself over this time in everything from NLP, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Life Coaching, Time Line Therapy, Neuroscience and Personal Development is that what lies in the GAP determines a full 80% of a person’s success or failure.
The transformational growth that had radically impacted my own life made me realise that it could powerfully transform and shift the lives of others too!
When I described the challenges that I had experienced in my talks and seminars, social posts and on my Youtube channel, people were coming forward and telling me that it felt like I was talking directly to them.
So I began to coach them through the exact process I now teach in my PEAK Performers Academy. To rapidly close the GAP and experience their own transformational growth!
It is now a full 20 years since that day in September 2001.
With over 80 000 hours of individual and group coaching, including a four year contract with the Royal Palace of Monaco working with Princess Charlene and her Foundation, my hero’s journey is still not over.
Personal Growth continues to be my greatest passion in life.
The privilege of witnessing the rapid transformational growth of those who courageously step into the GAP and embark on the Hero’s journey continues to, and will forever inspire me!

Our Transformational Growth Together
Scary Fact:- If you don’t have a very clear vision for where you want to be in 3 years, 5 years and even 10 years down the line, you are ALREADY there!
You can expect to be living exactly the same life for the rest of your tomorrows as you are living today.
Now, if you are completely satisfied with where your life is today and you are completely happy to be living this same life 3 to 10 years from now, congratulations! There is nothing wrong with that and we probably don’t need to continue our conversation.
But I am sure you wouldn’t be here if you were entirely satisfied with where your life is right now! AND you wouldn’t be searching for transformational growth to take you to where you want to go.
Since you are looking for a solution to a problem, you might recognize that there is a GAP between where you are today and where you want to be.
You may also recognise that standing in that GAP is not what you have to DO to close it. You have already tried that and felt the incredible resistance that comes with trying to do new things that put you outside of your comfort zone.
So you thought that perhaps you chose the wrong strategy and so you tried something new. But again, you came up against the same internal resistance.
Standing in the GAP is not what you have to do. It is the transformational growth you need to embrace to BECOME who you need to become to achieve the goal or the vision. It is your thoughts, your emotions, your values, your identity, your self-self worth and your world view that accounts for a full 80% of success or failure.
The other 20% is tactical. But you will never get to it effectively without first working hard in the GAP.
Getting very clear on what you want is our first crucial step. This kind of uncommon clarity has power because it ultimately will determine WHO you need to become and what you need to overcome to achieve it.
I will step into the GAP with you. Together we will identify the root causes of your resistance. Then we will create a powerful transformational growth strategy to slam the GAP shut so that you are free to take the kinds and qualities of action that will move you rapidly towards your vision, goals and ultimately your destiny!
